Next, open up your control panel. Are there any programs there that you don't use? Like, things that have been downloaded from the Internet such as games or toolbars that nobody has touched for awhile. These are things that can take up a lot of memory and can be easily disposed of. Also, if you've any old software that is still installed and no longer serves a function, such as the software for a printer or scanner that you no longer have, you should uninstall it. That will free up much more space and will make that little progress bar start moving a little faster.
Viruses and spy ware can also slow down your computer. There are number of various anti-virus, anti-spy ware, and firewall programs available. You may have some of these on your computer already. If so, you should make sure to run them on a regular basis. Anti-virus programs should be run at least once a week, especially if you spend a lot of time on the web. Anti-spy ware programs must be run at least every couple of weeks. You should also be using a pup-up blocker when you are on the internet.
If your computer is still slow, you want to consider defragging it. When files are saved to your hard drive, the computer often fragments them, putting several parts of the files in different places. After a while this creates a bit of a mess and slows down the computer as it has to run all over the place looking for all the parts of a file to open it up.
